“Strait of Hormuz closed”
Iran has closed the Strait of Hormuz and launched missile and drone attacks on Gulf states hosting United States military assets following fresh US strikes on Iranian military targets, in a major escalation of tensions in the Middle East.
The Pentagon said the US strikes came after Iran’s Revolutionary Guards attacked a merchant vessel in the Strait of Hormuz, forcing its crew to abandon ship.
Meanwhile, air raid sirens and explosions were reported in Qatar, Bahrain and the United Arab Emirates, where authorities said several missiles and drones were intercepted.
The latest developments have raised fears of a wider regional conflict and disruption to global shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s busiest oil transit routes.
