Tension as Tanzanian ship is found on Lake Malawi waters

A Tanzanian vessel carrying coal has been detained at Monkey Bay Jetty after it allegedly arrived without notifying Malawi’s port authorities in advance.

The vessel reached the harbour at around 10 a.m on Sunday but marine officer on duty denied it permission to dock and directed the captain to remain at anchorage as officials began investigations.

Authorities say vessels are expected to notify Malawi Lake Services and security agencies at least two days before arrival.

Malawi Lake Services Chief Executive Officer Joseph Banda said he only became aware of the vessel after it had already arrived at the port, adding that he was in Lilongwe when he received the information.

Meanwhile, officers from the Malawi Navy and the Marine Police have inspected the vessel and It is still being held at Monkey Bay as it awaits clearance from port authorities.
