Govt agrees with Chinese company on Lake Malawi vessels port

The Malawi Government has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with China’s Xiao Xiang Investment for the construction of four new lake vessels and a modern port at Chipoka in a move aimed at improving water transport and connectivity on Lake Malawi.

Secretary for Transport and Public Works, Bright Kumwembe, said the project is expected to strengthen the country’s water transport system and improve connectivity on the lake Malawi.

Meanwhile, managing Director of Xiao Xiang Investment Chen Cheng said the partnership will also include upgrades to port facilities, development of logistics infrastructure, skills training for Malawians and community development initiatives alongside the vessel construction.

Cheng added that the project is expected to promote sustainable transport while deepening economic cooperation between Malawi and China through improved transport infrastructure.
