University students want fees reduced
A group of students from public universities have submitted a petition to Parliament requesting a halt to the recently announced tuition fee increase, claiming that this rise will render higher education unaffordable for numerous Malawians.
The petition was delivered to the National Assembly on by Lilongwe Nyanja Member of Parliament Steve Malondera, with signatures from Shakira Rejoice Mbambha, Louie Mirenda, Prince Mattaka, and Shewana Kasumba.
The students express that the new fee structure jeopardizes the educational prospects of thousands, cautioning that many may have to postpone or abandon their studies due to financial difficulties.
They also point out that although some students benefit from loans provided by the Higher Education Students’ Loans Board, many enrolled in the economic fee-paying system, Open and Distance Learning (ODL) programs, and upgrader programs are not eligible for these loans and must rely on personal funds to pay for their education.
Additionally, the petition urges Parliament to consult with relevant stakeholders to ensure that any changes to tuition fees reflect the socioeconomic challenges faced by students and their families.
In reply, Malondera acknowledged receipt of the petition and stated that he would forward it to the appropriate authorities for review.
