Malawi lands milestone in electricity provision
Electricity services in Malawi are expected to improve as the Electricity Supply Corporation of Malawi (ESCOM) is slated to commission the country’s landmark 20MW/40MWh Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) this Friday.
The event will be presided over by Minister of Energy Jean Mathanga.
The event wil begin with the official switch-on ceremony at the Kanengo project site before the main programme at the Bingu International Convention Centre (BICC) in Lilongwe.
Funded by the Global Energy Alliance for People and Planet (GEAPP) at a cost of US$20.245 million, the battery energy storage system is expected to improve grid stability, manage peak electricity demand and increase the use of renewable energy.
Meanwhile,ESCOM Chief Executive Officer Engineer William Kaipa has said the project will allow stored electricity to be deployed instantly during fluctuations and peak hours, significantly improving the country’s power supply and demand management.
The commissioning marks a major milestone in Malawi’s efforts to strengthen energy security, with the system expected to deliver more reliable electricity to homes, hospitals, schools, businesses and industries.
