Ireen not Thandi to represent Malawi at Miss World

Controversy is brewing in the pageant community after Miss Malawi organizers announced that 21-year-old Ireen Navicha will represent Malawi at Miss World, bypassing reigning Miss Malawi Thandi Chisi.

According to Miss Malawi official Godfrey Kambewa, the decision was based on precedent.

The organization has historically sent contestants aged between 18 and 25, and after a “careful review,” they believe Navicha has the greatest chance of bringing the crown home.

Kambewa also pointed to Navicha’s community work with girls returning to school, saying it aligns with Miss World’s focus areas and could strengthen her bid.

The Miss World pageant, set for Vietnam in August to September this year, accepts contestants aged 17 to 27.

But the move has not sat well with many.

Chisi, 27, is still the reigning Miss Malawi and technically qualifies under Miss World’s 17-27 age limit.

Critics are asking why a sitting queen would be sidelined a year into her reign, with some accusing organizers of changing the goalposts to favor a younger candidate.

“So we crown a queen and then tell her she’s too old months later? What message does that send?” one pageant follower posted online.

Miss Malawi has defended the choice, saying national organizations have discretion in selecting representatives.

Still, the decision has left many questioning transparency, fairness, and whether age is now trumping the actual title.
