Govt to resettle Kasasile families
Government says it has stepped up efforts to permanently resettle families currently living in temporary shelters at Kasasile in Nkhata Bay District, with plans to identify and acquire suitable land in a neighbouring district.
The announcement follows a meeting chaired by Minister of Lands, Housing and Urban Development Chimwemwe Chipungu with Members of Parliament from the Northern Region.
The meeting, was attended by Minister of Justice Charles Mhango and Minister of Defence Dr. Feston Kaunda, reviewed progress on the resettlement process and agreed on the way forward.
According to the Ministry, government intends to settle all the affected families in one location.
While the search for permanent land continues, the families will remain at the temporary shelter in Thungwe, where the Department of Disaster Management Affairs (DoDMA) will continue providing humanitarian support.
Meanwhile, Government has also established a committee comprising Members of Parliament, officials from the Ministry of Lands, DoDMA and other government agencies to coordinate the identification of suitable land and oversee the welfare of the families.
