Malawi Vice President involved in an accident

Details have emerged that Malawi Vice-President Jane Ansah was involved in an accident and was unhurt after her official vehicle suffered a tyre burst in Ntcheu while travelling from Blantyre to Lilongwe.

Office of the Vice-President spokesperson Richard Mveriwa confirmed the incident yesterday but said he would provide further details later, as qouted by a local newspaper.

Reports say that the incident involved a Toyota Land Cruiser 300 VX in which Ansah was travelling.

Sources at the Office of the Vice-President said an investigation is underway to establish the cause of the tyre burst.

A video circulating on social media shows the Vice-President’s motorcade stopped by the roadside with security officers standing outside the vehicle.

National Police Deputy Spokesperson Alfred Chinthere yesterday referred enquiries to the Office of the Vice-President, saying it was best placed to comment.

The incident comes three months after police arrested a 32-year-old videographer, Esau Nalikole, on charges of criminal trespass and flying a drone over Ansah’s residence in Area 3, Lilongwe.

The drone was reportedly operating with live coverage at the time.There have also been previous incidents involving serving vice-presidents’ motorcades.

In 2020, the late Vice-President Saulos Chilima’s motorcade was involved in a crash with a Toyota Vitz near Phalula in Balaka.

Four people died after the Toyota Vitz reportedly lost control and collided with a vehicle in the convoy.

Chilima was not hurt.In 2010, a vehicle in then Vice-President Joyce Banda’s motorcade was hit by another vehicle at Kanengo in Lilongwe. Banda was travelling in a different vehicle in the convoy at the time.
