Dedza hit by massive condom use!

The number of young people visiting Dzindevu Hospital in Dedza seeking condoms has reportedly increased by 70 percent in the past three weeks.

The Director of Dzindevu Hospital, Innocent Mponya, says that the increase was due to the upcoming virginity festival in the area.

He said 633 young people visited the clinic to receive the condoms.

Health expert, Donald Kanjere, said the increase in the number shows that more young people are taking steps to protect themselves from sexually transmitted diseases.

Condom use among sexually active people aged 15 to 49 in Malawi stands at approximately 48 percent, according to reports from the National AIDS Commission (NAC).

Key Challenges and Barriers affecting condom use in Malawi:

Behavioral and Cultural Factors: Over-reliance on free public supplies, low perceived risk of infection, and social stigma hinder consistent habits.

Relationship Dynamics: Societal perceptions often tie condom use to a lack of trust or intimacy within established relationships rather than health protection.

Access Gaps: Distribution bottlenecks prevent consistent supplies from reaching remote or last-mile communities
