MCA Students get injunction over exam fiasco

Over a hundred students enrolled at the Malawi College of Accountancy (MCA) have obtained a court injunction preventing the institution from prohibiting them from sitting their end-of-semester examinations, despite having already paid the examination fees.

Geoffrey Pascal, the lawyer representing the students, explains that the college’s system for downloading examination dockets experienced a technical failure, which prevented students from retrieving their materials.

Rather than resolving the technical issue, the college communicated via email that students would need to complete deferred examinations and submit an additional K50,000 payment per subject.

According to an anonymous student affected by the situation, the system failure impacted more than 300 students across both the Lilongwe and Blantyre MCA locations, though only 115 chose to pursue legal action.

The student said: “We consider it unjust to hold us accountable for a technical failure originating from the institution’s infrastructure. We are simply requesting an equitable resolution that permits us to complete our examinations without incurring supplementary charges.”
