Malawi open maiden Wafcon with win over Nigeria

The Malawi Women’s National Football Team, commenced their inaugural 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) journey with a remarkable 3-2 win against the reigning champions, Nigeria.

Temwa Chawinga netted two goals, while Tabitha Chawinga also contributed to Malawi’s scoreline.

Nigeria’s goals were scored by captain Rasheedat Ajibade from the penalty spot and Uchenna Kanu, who addedWagcon the second.

This victory secured the Scorchers a full three points in Group C. Malawi is set to compete against Egypt on Saturday for their second group match.

Meanwhile, Zambia also started their campaign successfully with a win over Egypt.
