Malawi on primary school education improvement drive

Malawi has taken a major step towards improving the quality of education by advancing primary teacher training from certificate level to diploma and degree programmes.

Speaking during the opening of a workshop organised by the Malawi Institute of Education (MIE), Principal Secretary for Administration in the Ministry of Education, Thokozile Banda, said quality education begins with well-prepared teachers. She described the review and refinement of course outlines as a key milestone in ensuring future teachers receive relevant knowledge and practical skills.

The workshop has brought together education experts from universities and teacher training colleges across the country to finalise course outlines that will guide the training of diploma and degree-level primary school teachers.

However, the revised curriculum is expected to strengthen teacher preparation and improve classroom instruction.

Meanwhile, MIE Acting Executive Director Jennings Kayira said the new course outlines place greater emphasis on subject content, teaching methods and assessment.

He said the initiative demonstrates Malawi’s commitment to raising teaching standards and improving learning outcomes for children across the country.
