Malawi to play against Ghana in Wafcon Quarterfinal match
Malawi and Ghana will clash in the quarter-finals of the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) on Sunday, 9 August 2026, at the Moulay El Hassan Stadium in Rabat, Morocco.
The Malawi National Women’s Football Team, affectionately known as “The Scorchers,” stand just one win away from making global history as they prepare to battle Ghana’s Black Queens.
For tournament debutants Malawi, a victory in this crucial fixture means an automatic spot in the semi-finals and historic qualification for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Brazil.
Lovemore Fazili’s side emerged as the true surprise package of the tournament, surprisingly topping Group C on goal-difference rule tiebreakers.
Meanwhile, Ghana secured their progression to the knockout stage after grinding out a tense 1-1 draw against Mali to claim the final available slot out of Group D.
Malawi entered their first-ever WAFCON and immediately shook the continent by defeating ten-time African champions Nigeria 3-2 in an opening-day thriller, powered by a clinical brace from Temwa Chawinga and a goal from her sister Tabitha Chawinga.
The debutants followed that success with a convincing 3-1 victory over Egypt.
Despite a narrow 2-1 defeat to regional rivals Zambia in their final group match, the Scorchers finished at the summit of Group C with six points.
On the other hand, Ghana opened their Group D campaign with a routine 2-0 victory over Cape Verde before suffering a minor setback in a 1-1 defeat to a strong Cameroon side.
Facing a must-not-lose scenario in their final group fixture against Mali, Kim Lars Björkegren’s side displayed immense defensive discipline to lock in their qualification.
Historically, Ghana holds the psychological advantage, having won the two most recent encounters between the sides, which were played during tournament preparations.
The Black Queens defeated Malawi 3-1 in an international friendly at the Ziaida Palace Complex in June 2025, and followed that up with a 4-0 win in August 2026, where Doris Boaduwaa scored a stunning hat-trick.
While Ghana boasts a rich history with a 12th tournament appearance, Malawi’s lethal attack, spearheaded by the world-class Chawinga sisters, makes this a highly unpredictable and explosive knockout clash.
