Civil society wants action on alleged police corruption
Stakeholders and child rights organizations in Machinga are seeking clarification regarding the allegations surrounding the release of a 19-year-old defilement suspect, Kenneth Makangala, from Ntaja Police Station.
As per a police statement an officer at Ntaja is accused of releasing a Mozambican national who had been arrested by Nayuchi Police and was awaiting court appearance for allegedly defiling a minor, despite hospital results reportedly confirming the defilement incident.
In response, Member of Parliament Esther Jolobala for Machinga East and Chairperson of the Machinga CSO Network, Belinda Somanje Chimombo, have expressed their concerns, labeling the incident as alarming and a potential threat to child safety, vowing to pursue the issue until justice is achieved.
At this time, National Police spokesperson Gladys Chiwaula has not yet provided a comment on the situation.
