Chief arrested for possessing fake money

Police in Chitipa have arrested 46-year-old Mutima Nyondo from Mbilima Village, located under Senior Chief Mwaulambya, on charges of possessing counterfeit Zambian kwacha and Tanzanian shillings.

Chitipa Police Deputy Public Relations Officer, Mathews Mfune, said the arrest took place on September 8, 2026, following a tip-off from concerned citizens.

He stated that detectives tracked Nyondo to Chitipa Trading Centre, and after interrogating him, he directed them to a lodge where authorities recovered 7,200 Zambian kwacha and 10,000 Tanzanian shillings, all believed to be counterfeit.

According to Mfune, the seized money is being held as evidence while police continue their investigation to determine the origin of the suspected counterfeit currency and whether others are implicated.
