Malawi on alert as Cholera strikes Zambia

The Ministry of Health has announced heightened alerts to identify and manage any potential cholera outbreak, given that neighbouring Zambia is currently experiencing the disease with 22 fatalities among 819 documented cases since July 2024.

Ministry spokesperson Benedicto Mbewe says that enhanced disease monitoring has been implemented at entry points, with border regions designated as priority areas due to elevated risk.

Mbewe further noted that the authorities have strategically distributed medical resources and established trained emergency response teams throughout the healthcare system to facilitate rapid outbreak containment.

In related developments, health rights advocate George Jobe has urged greater public education regarding sanitation and hygiene standards, emphasizing Malawi’s geographical proximity to Zambia alongside the anticipated rainy season.

The Zambian cholera crisis has impacted 12 districts spanning five provinces, with Lusaka recording the highest incidence at 395 cases. Malawi concluded its cholera epidemic on 1st September 2024, which resulted in 25 deaths from 3,200 confirmed infections.
