Malawi to learn Afcon qualifiers opponents tomorrow

The Malawi National Football Team, known as the Flames, will discover their opponents for the 2027 AFCON qualifiers when the Confederation of African Football (CAF) holds the draw tomorrow in Cairo, Egypt.

A total of forty-eight nations, including the Flames, will be organized into 12 groups prior to the qualifiers, which are set to take place from September this year until November next year.

CAF revealed the draw procedures on Monday.

The Flames are placed in Pot Three along with Rwanda, Kenya, Libya, Gambia, Togo, Mauritania, Namibia, and Sudan.

This indicates that the Flames cannot be matched against teams from the same pot.

However, they are expected to face formidable opponents from Pot One, such as Morocco, Senegal, Tunisia, South Africa, Cameroon, and Ivory Coast, as well as teams from Pot Two, which include Ghana, Angola, Gabon, Zambia, and Burkina Faso.

Additionally, they will encounter one of the lower-ranked teams, such as Lesotho, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Burundi, South Sudan, or Liberia.

Co-hosts Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania will participate in the qualifiers even though they have already secured spots for next year’s tournament.

The pots are as follows:

Pot One: Morocco, Senegal, Nigeria, Algeria, Egypt, Ivory Coast, Tunisia, Cameroon, DR Congo, Mali, South Africa, Burkina Faso.

Pot Two: Cape Verde, Ghana, Guinea, Gabon, Uganda, Angola, Benin, Zambia, Mozambique, Madagascar, Equatorial Guinea, Comoros.

Pot Three: Kenya, Libya, Tanzania, Niger, Mauritania, Gambia, Sudan, Sierra Leone, Namibia, Togo, Malawi, Rwanda

Pot Four: Zimbabwe, Guinea-Bissau, Congo, Central African Republic, Liberia, Burundi, Ethiopia, Lesotho, Botswana, South Sudan, Eritrea, Somalia
