Independence Day road accidents drop
The Malawi Police Service (MPS) has recorded a sharp drop in fatal road accidents and road traffic deaths during the 2026 Independence Day holiday.
Meanwhile, the MPS says two fatal road accidents were recorded during the July 6 holiday, compared to 6 July during the same period in 2025.
Road traffic deaths also dropped from seven last year to two this year.
Police has also reported that no serious road accidents or damages-only crashes were recorded during the holiday.
However, seven minor accidents occurred, leaving eight people with slight injuries.
According to MPS, the improvement follows intensified traffic law enforcement, increased highway patrols, coordinated road safety interventions, and nationwide road safety awareness campaigns conducted with various stakeholders.
