Young University of Malawi Lecturer found dead

Authorities in Zomba are reportedly investigating the death of Mary Humba Nyirenda, a 23-year-old assistant lecturer at the University of Malawi (UNIMA), who was discovered deceased in her room at her residence in the City.

Deputy Public Relations Officer at Zomba Police Station, Constable Andrew Mwale, reported that family members grew worried when Nyirenda locked herself in her bedroom and did not respond to repeated calls.

According to Mwale, around 8 p.m. on July 19, her uncle used an axe to force open the bedroom door and found her unresponsive inside.

Humba: No more.

Police arrived at the scene and transported the body to the mortuary at Zomba Central Hospital, where a post-mortem examination will be carried out to determine the precise cause of death.

Mwale mentioned that initial investigations suggest Nyirenda had undergone surgery at Banja La Mtsogolo Clinic on June 30, 2026.

He further noted that on July 18, she had expressed concerns that her surgical wound had reopened, resulting in significant pain and difficulty sleeping.

The police have stated that inquiries into the circumstances surrounding her death are still in progress.
