UTM, UDF, PDP demand Namiwa’s release
Three opposition parties, UTM, United Democratic Front (UDF) and People’s Development Party (PDP) have jointly called for the release of activist Sylvester Namiwa, saying the treason charge against him threatens freedom of expression and the rule of law.
In a joint statement signed by PDP President Kondwani Nankhumwa, UTM President Dalitso Kabambe and UDF President Atupele Muluzi, the parties said Namiwa’s treason charge appears to be based on comments he made during a television interview rather than any violent act.
Meanwhile, the parties said Namiwa should be released immediately or granted bail while his case is before the courts.
They also stressed that he is innocent until proven guilty.
They have since called on the government and relevant authorities to handle the case fairly and in line with the Constitution, saying the matter is an important test of Malawi’s democracy and justice system.
