Police arrest 40 vandals in Balaka

Police in Balaka have taken into custody 40 people linked to incidents of violence, looting, and property destruction that occurred in Mponda.

The violence and looting reportedly followed allegations involving the victim, Hassan Safili Obeya, a businessman, who is suspected of human trafficking involving a woman who sells vegetables.

As stated by Balaka Police Public Relations Officer Inspector Gladson M’bumpha, the arrested individuals consist of 31 men and nine women.

They are anticipated to face court proceedings for charges including arson, theft, and malicious damage to property.

Authorities have recovered a range of items believed to have been looted, such as a refrigerator, mattresses, tractor components, tires, iron sheets, pipes, chairs, and drums.

Members of the public are strongly warned against taking the law into their own hands or engaging in mob justice.

Anyone with information relating to the incident is encouraged to report it to the police.

Police have assured the public that investigations are continuing and that all individuals found to have committed offences will be brought to justice in accordance with the law.
