Famous Machinga toilets approved for construction
The Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) has cleared Machinga District Council to proceed with the reconstruction of 17 toilets damaged by Cyclone Freddy under the Resilient Communities Recovery Project Phase Two (RCRP-2).
The development follows a request by the council for an independent investigation into the procurement process for the reconstruction works.
In a letter dated September 10, 2026, Acting ACB Director General Gabriel Gift Chembezi said the Bureau conducted a preliminary investigation based on procurement records submitted by the council.
Chembezi said the investigation found no evidence of corruption or any material breach of the Public Procurement and Disposal of Public Assets Act, and therefore advised the council to proceed with the procurement as planned.
However, the ACB said it may investigate the matter further if it finds evidence of corruption or any breach of the law in the procurement process.
