Govt crackdown on illegal fuel deals
The Ministry of Homeland Security has announced a crackdown on illegal fuel storage, with the initial operation taking place last night, resulting in the Police seizing over 4,000 liters of fuel in Mangochi District.
In a press release dated April 26 and signed by Minister of Homeland Security Peter Mukhito, the ministry detailed that the Police confiscated 33 jerry cans, each containing 20 liters of fuel, at the first location, and 19 drums, each holding 200 liters, at the second site.
“Several more 20-liter jerry cans filled with fuel were also seized. The magnitude of these recoveries indicates an organized and illegal fuel trade network that has now been disrupted,” the statement partially reads.
“All seized fuel has been secured and placed under Police custody as part of the ongoing investigations.”
The statement further mentions that a special investigation team has initiated a thorough inquiry aimed at tracing the source and supply chain of the fuel, identifying all individuals and entities involved, including any commercial outlets facilitating this activity, and uncovering the full extent of the illegal distribution network.
The ministry has praised the brave and responsible actions of the well-wishers, whose timely information and tips made the operation feasible. “This single act of vigilance has protected national resources and reinforced the rule of law,” the statement concludes.
This development follows a series of tragic fire incidents caused by the illegal storage of fuels such as petrol and diesel in residential areas.
