Man fined for running fake clinic
The Chikwawa First Grade Magistrate’s Court convicted Francis Kagone (30) yesterday, imposing a fine of K700,000 for operating an unlicensed clinic in the district.
Chikwawa Police prosecutor Ernest Mangwena reported that police acted on a tip-off from concerned citizens on May 29, 2026, regarding Kagone’s operation of a clinic at Maperera Trading Centre.
When questioned, he was unable to present a valid licence and was subsequently arrested.
Authorities also discovered a variety of medical drugs at the clinic.
In court, Kagone admitted guilt for violating section 17(1)(a) of the Pharmacy, Medicines and Poisons Board Act.Mangwena requested a severe penalty, emphasizing that unlicensed clinics pose a threat to public safety.
In his defense, Kagone sought leniency, highlighting his guilty plea and status as a first-time offender.
elivering her verdict, first grade magistrate Annie Chikhadzula imposed a fine of K700,000 or a 24-month sentence of Imprisonment with Hard Labour (IHL), stating that his actions jeopardized the health and safety of many individuals.
She also mandated that the confiscated drugs be returned to the Pharmacy, Medicines and Poisons Board for proper disposal.
Kagone, a resident of Mafumbi Village, T/A Makhuwira in Chikwawa, has since settled the fine.
