Govt goes to save money in Independence Day events

The Government of Malawi has declared that this year’s Independence Day celebrations will not feature state-funded public events, citing ongoing fiscal consolidation efforts and the necessity to allocate resources towards economic recovery and enhancing public service delivery.

In a statement, the Office of the President and Cabinet (OPC) announced that President Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika has instructed that there will be no government-funded festivities for the 2026 Independence Day celebration.

The OPC indicated that this decision demonstrates the administration’s dedication to fiscal responsibility and the careful management of public resources as the nation works towards economic recovery and stabilization initiatives.

Instead, the President has designated this year’s Independence Day observance for a National Thanksgiving and Supplication Programme, urging religious leaders, faith communities, and all Malawians to engage in special prayers from July 3 to July 5, 2026.

“The government believes that the current economic conditions necessitate that all available public resources be directed towards priority sectors that facilitate economic recovery, service delivery, food security, and the well-being of Malawians,” part of the statement reads.

The OPC encourages Malawians to utilize the prayer period to express gratitude for peace and unity, while also praying for national leaders, a fruitful agricultural season, protection against adverse weather events, including the expected El Nino phenomenon, and the success of ongoing economic reforms.

The statement, signed by Chief Secretary to the Government, Justin Saidi, emphasizes that this measure is temporary and is part of a larger initiative aimed at restoring economic stability and reinforcing public finances.
