Ramaphosa calls for SADC solidarity with Sudan, Middle East

South African President Cyril Ramaphosa has urged peace in conflict-hit regions, saying SADC stands in solidarity with people affected by the wars in Sudan and the Middle East.

He also voiced support for countries responding to an Ebola outbreak in parts of the region.

Addressing the opening of the Virtual Extraordinary SADC Summit of Heads of State and Government on Monday, Ramaphosa centred his remarks on regional and global crises.

These included the political situation in Madagascar, the conflicts in Sudan and the Middle East, and the Ebola outbreak.

However, the South African leader made no mention of the recent xenophobic attacks in South Africa.

That silence comes amid growing regional concern over the safety of foreign nationals, including Malawians.

The omission follows South Africa’s withdrawal of a planned presentation on xenophobic attacks from the agenda of the Extraordinary SADC Organ Troika Summit earlier this week.
