Prodigal son: Man who stole from NBS bank seeks forgiveness
A previous employee of NBS Bank, who is currently serving a 10-year prison sentence for stealing MK47 Million has requested forgiveness from his former employer.
Gift Nafere met with officials from NBS Bank at the Limbe Branch, facilitated by the Malawi Prisons Service’s Restorative Justice and Peacebuilding Programme.
During this meeting, he expressed remorse for the distress his actions caused and acknowledged his responsibility for the crime.
Nafere shared that his time in prison has allowed him to reflect on his errors and comprehend the harm he inflicted.
“I was not compelled to be here. I deemed it necessary to reach out to you to formally apologize for the pain I have caused,” he stated.
He mentioned that his imprisonment has transformed his perspective on life and relationships, encouraging others to consider their actions carefully, live within their means, and uphold their integrity.
Chenjerani Kanyinji, the Acting Head of Human Resources at NBS Bank, indicated that the bank has granted forgiveness to Nafere, calling the reconciliation an essential step towards mending relationships.
Kanyinji noted that this process has also provided the bank with a chance to reflect on the events that transpired and to identify lessons that could enhance its systems.
Currently, Nafere is teaching at Blantyre Prison Reformatory School while serving his sentence.
He expressed his desire to reintegrate into society as a responsible citizen upon completing his prison term.
Nafere was convicted for the theft of K47 million from NBS Bank, a case that garnered significant national attention.
His meeting with former colleagues is part of the Malawi Prisons Service’s Restorative Justice and Peacebuilding Programme, which aims to foster accountability, reconciliation, and the successful reintegration of offenders into society.
