Malawi Parliament to act on corruption in hospitals
Chairperson of the Parliamentary Committee on Health, Anthony Masamba, expressed disappointment over corruption particularly inpublic healthcare facilities, which adversely affects Malawians.
During a media engagement as part of an inquiry into corruption within health facilities, Masamba emphasized the committee’s commitment to involving stakeholders in order to eliminate such malpractice.
Golden Matonga, Managing Partner at the Platform for Investigative Journalism (PIJ), praised the committee for allowing a thorough investigation into corruption cases within public facilities, which were examined by a group of journalists.
He also encouraged the committee to investigate certain systems that contribute to corruption in public health facilities, prioritizing the welfare of Malawians.
An investigative report released earlier this year by a collaborative team of investigative journalists revealed several corrupt practices, including the monetization of free medical care, organized bribery, and significant institutional oversight.
Hospitals that were part of the investigation included Mzuzu Central Hospital, Kamuzu Central Hospital, Queen Elizabeth Hospital, and district hospitals in Nkhata Bay, Likoma, Mulanje, Thyolo, and Chiradzulu.
